On what merit are Professional Driving Permits issued when no mandatory road-safety guidelines or formal driver training are required to obtain one?
A PrDP holder is expected to navigate constantly changing traffic conditions, making continuous, split-second decisions behind the steering wheel, all while transporting members of the public, including school children. The responsibility for safe travel rests entirely on the driver.
Yet under South African law, the PrDP holder must comply with strict medical, legal, and fitness standards while operating heavy-duty commercial public transport vehicles.
This imbalance raises a serious question:
How can such responsibility be lawful or fair without compulsory professional driver training?
